BEYOND NETWORKS: THE EVOLUTION OF LIVING SYSTEMS
Watch on YouTube.

This lecture series is an exploration of organisms and their evolution which goes beyond our machine-based metaphors of genetic programmes, evolutionary optimisation, and networks in systems biology. It attempts to provide a fresh and dynamic perspective on the complex intertwined processes that constitute life in its beautiful diversity.

Lectures given in the context of the masters programme in Evolutionary Systems Biology at the University of Vienna between April and June 2020.

MODELLING DEVELOPMENTAL SYSTEMS
Watch on YouTube.

This mini-series of lectures is about why and how to model developmental systems.

Part 1 argues that we absolutely need dynamical systems models for proper causal-mechanistic explanations in developmental biology.

Parts 2 & 3 introduce two examples—the vertebrate fin-to-limb transition, as well as segmentation genes in flies—that illustrate the use of models and the insights you can only gain from modelling.

I have developed and taught this mini-series over the past few years as part of the Wellcome PhD Programme in Developmental Biology at the University of Cambridge. I thank Clare Baker and Steve Russell for their continued support. The opinions expressed in this lecture do not necessarily reflect theirs! 😉

These lectures aim to convey a basic understanding of the purpose and potential of computational and mathematical modelling in developmental biology, and to familiarise the viewer with the basic concepts required for such understanding.

They assume that the viewer is somewhat familiar with molecular genetics, developmental and evolutionary biology, but they do not require any previous knowledge of mathematics (beyond high-school level). The intended target audience are early-stage experimentalists in the fields of developmental and evolutionary biology, but others may find the lectures interesting as well. I tried to make them as accessible as possible.
